Students should wear shorts and a tee-shirt with poodle socks and
appropriate shoes. *New students should wear the same clothing with
long socks and flexible shoes. Beginners can start off wearing ballet
slippers and eventually, Gillies should be purchased. Boys can wear
jazz shoes with a flexible
sole
until the advanced shoe is needed. The knees need to be seen at
all times please do not wear pants, skirts, or halter tops to class.
In the winter students can wear sweat pants
with
their
shorts
underneath.
Hard shoes can be acquired when
a student reaches the appropriate level. Girls need to wear their
hair back away from their face during class. Girls should wear their
hair back in a pony tail during class.
We recommend that you contact Kerreen O'Connor for our out
of town vendor at www.kerreen.com.
She can help you decide on the right brand of shoes that are needed.
The light shoes are called Gillies, and the socks that are required
are called Poodle socks. Eventually with enough practice, you will
be ready to purchase hard shoes. Kerreen also has a wide variety
of Irish dance CD's for sale. You will need to practice at home to
Irish music. Suggested CD's include: Mike and Merv, Damien
McKee's Mind the Step and anything by Pat King. Those those
with set dances should look for basic reels and jigs.
Performance Costume
Beginner dancers wear white button down, long sleeved blouse with
a black skirt that can be made by Jill Moyes. It is essential for students to arrive 30 minutes prior to performance time and be ready to
go with costume on and hair done. Hair must be curled preferably in ringlets
or wear your wigs. Your hair
must be pulled away from the face (no long bangs). A headband can hold
back loose hair. We want to look neat and professional when we perform.
Don't forget: shoes, socks, kick pants, skirt/shirt/dress and
headband.
